The stairs of the City Council of Tórshavn have different function depending on the events. On daily basis, it has function of access with a ramp which facilitates the access. It can also become a speech platform or a display area.
The design consists in keeping the layout of the existing stairs and extending the area further out to the whole entrance facade.
The project implies a detailed work on the Faroese stones composing the stairs. We can see that the existing stairs have been repaired with new material which stand out from the old ones. We propose for example to use burned stone as new material, which will be to closest to the old material. The existing stones used to have a gap of 10 mm or more in some places, which let space for rocks and moss to come in between. The new stairs will be made of stones which will be standing edge to edge, with a gap of 3-5 mm maximum.
