Høllin á Hálsi

About

The project is an extension of an existing sports hall in Tórshavn, the Faroese capital. The sports hall is not only used for handball and football but also for meetings, concerts and video projections.

The sports hall has initially been built in 1970 and became too small. Indeed the need of sport field has grown in the capital and it became necessary to welcome a second field in the sport hall.

ZETA took part in the design for the extension of the sports hall which will use the area which is today partly used as a parking. By extending in the continuity of its existing shape, the project will keep the identity of the building. The parking will be moved down the building, by converting an unused green area.

The extension respects the existing landscape by being half buried in the ground. The building imitates the rocks on the surrounding landscape, which only the eroded part is visible. Some parts of the north-west and north-east façades are opened with glass façade to provide natural indirect light in the building.
