Vestmanna Bygdarætlan

About

Commissioned by the Municipality of Vestmanna, ZETA was charged to make a proposal for a development plan of the village.

The project idea results from an issue which is related to many Faroese villages. Vestmanna used to be the only ferry harbor linking the island of Streymoy and the island of Vágar. An economical center grew naturally around the harbour, including at the harbour itself with shipyard and fishing activity. When a tunnel was created upstream Vestmanna, a new economical center grew at the entrance road of the village. There is since then a conflict between those two centers which at the same time prevent the uniformity of the village and overtake the potential attractivity of other places in Vestmanna.

Our vision for this project is to “reveal and enhance” the qualities, values of Vestmanna with the help of 8 different projects, like pearls on a thread. Each project upgrades and creates a better physical link in between the different area with potential. Each pearl is a place or an area, along the main road, where a function gets revived and old functions is given a new purposes and functions. Our strategy stands on bringing minor changes, small upgrades which will not denature the village but will bring its quality, values forward, instead of demolishing and rebuilding.

The projects include physical links such as pedestrian bridge, upgrade of pedestrian paths but also sports facilities, history museum, touristic facilities, viewpoints.

Our project doesn´t aim for substantial changes but small upgrades of different kinds which will, as a whole, revive the village of Vestmanna.
